Nick Grimshaw and the fight against the enshittification of BBC 6 Music

This isn’t going to be much of an essay. All I have to say really is that, yes, I still think Nemone is one of THE worst presenters on BBC 6 Music* but that Grimshaw is almost – not quite – but almost as bad. I’ve seen his show described as the Radio One-ification of BBC 6 Music and I don’t disagree. I quite like him professionally, having worked with him plenty. But as a presenter he’s just so tiring. I’m particularly tired of the sharp intake of breath he uses to emphasise that Grimmy Is Doing A Funny, Everyone.

It’s just a very safe, very pedestrian, terribly over-friendly couple of hours of total ear-slop, playlist notwithstanding. And of course I understand he’s got absolutely zero input on that (with good reason – of all the presenters I think Grimshaw might be the one with the least apparent music smarts), and I do acknowledge that the increasingly rigid and repetitive playlist is probably BBC 6 Music’s biggest problem generally, leaving Deb and Nathan to save the entire day all by themselves with New Music Fix.

But the playlist combined with his white bread ‘I’m Doing A Funny, Everyone’ comedy presenter stylings means that all 6 Music between 7am and 9am is background noise for me, except it somehow manages to annoy me more often than not.

Compounding the problem is that the content of Lauren Laverne’s show isn’t much better, and that pains me as Lauren really is a lovely human being and really knows her shit. But her show format is as safe to me as Grimmy’s. Both slots seem to be far too focussed on catering to the PRs of this world, foisting self-aggrandising actors onto us all too often to bleat on about how sensitive and thoughtful they are and how their latest “work” is so important and unique and fuuuuuuck off why are you STILL TALKING, play some goddamn music, I don’t even care if it’s the Foo Fighters yet again, the station is called BBC 6 Music after all.

But like I say at least Lauren knows her stuff, being an actually talented and accomplished artiste herself. Grimmy reeks of T4 and One FM – yes, I know they don’t call it that anymore, my point is his style is very much Of A Time and I listen to 6 Music in my 40s and 50s because I am very much over that shit.

He’s just done another sharp intake of breath. I guess he’s doing a funny? Oh and he’s talking TV with some guest. PLAY. SOME. MUSIC.

* the fact Nemone still doesn’t have her own show while plenty of other much, much better presenters like Deb Grant have swooped in to nab a permanent slot backs that up. Still, I guess I’d rather Grimshaw than Nemone. Her utterly dead-sounding recital of whatever’s been printed out and thrust under her nose to read continues to make her one of the hardest presenters on the station to listen to, and I still have to turn off the radio in between the music most of the time when she’s covering for someone (the only gig 6 will give her, should tell you something).
