Zero Company: it’s Star Wars XCOM and I love it!

I’d literally never heard of Star Wars Zero Company until the review embargo lifted on release day and everyone started raving about it. I can’t remember the last time I bought a game on release day but I went straight to ShopTo and picked up a £50 PSN voucher for £45 and started playing.

Firstly, it feels exactly like Star Wars XCOM and that’s amazing. It’s made by Bit Reactor, which includes developers who previously worked on the new XCOM games, and Marvel’s Midnight Sun which I gather is quite similar. I might not be very good as this sort of game but I know how to play it and the gameplay is instantly familiar, with plenty of quality-of-life improvements they’ve learned along the way.

I’ve not encountered too many bugs yet but here’s some stuff I love and some stuff I’d like to see fixed or added.

LOVE: that you can jump around the base using the menu rather than having to walk to each spot. You still need to walk to people you want or need to chat to though.

WANT: I want to build different outfits for each of my crew and save them to custom slots so I can easily swap between them. Given how they actively encourage you to change your appearance at any time (right down to gender, face, and voice) I hope this is something I can unlock later, or they can add in an update.

WANT: to be able to move the camera myself during the enemy turn. The camera often obscures what’s actually happening behind scenery when it moves to a fixed position, such as when the enemy moves, or when overwatch is triggered. The overwatch camera was often glitched in XCOM 1 and 2 as well so I guess that’s a tricky one to get right every time, but I hope they can give us camera control during the enemy move.
