Masaniello Surbiton is under new management, changing name, keeping menu… for now

Masaniello Twickenham is now the only branch of Masaniello in the SW London/Surrey area, after selling off their Surbiton branch recently (March/April-ish, 2025). When you google them right now you’ll find a mobile number instead of the old landline, which I found a little disconcerting at first but clued me in to there possibly being a change of ownership before I called to place my once-monthly order.

The new owner sounds Italian himself, which is super reassuring. He said they have the same chef, which is the most important thing to my mind, and the menu is the same for now. Also the name is changing from Masaniello Surbiton but I didn’t catch what to. It sounded Italian too though, perhaps his own name. I’m not sure if he’s any connection to the previous owners or if they would only sell to an Italian owner, but it all bodes well for keeping the quality.

For some reason they aren’t taking phone orders right now. Not sure why, as all the previous owners used to do is take the order verbally then you collect and pay for it later, same as every independent pizza shop I’ve ever been to. Not a huge problem, their pizzas only take about 10 minutes to cook. I went for a Hamsik just now and it’s the same as always.

One negative I’ve noticed though – they recently switched from using the really tasty thick cut pepperoni to a kinda pedestrian wafer thin slice like you can get anywhere. It’s a very disappointing change to their Focosa in particular, I’ll not order that again. Not sure if that change came in with the new owners or if that’s just a coincidence. I asked what it was like when I was in just now, a few weeks since I had my last, very disappointing Focosa, and they said yeah it’s thinly sliced. Boooo.

Anyway, good to know that for now it’s business as usual with one of the best Italian pizzas in Surbiton – if you know of others I’d love to try them!
